Pileus medium-sized, 30-80 x 20-60 mm, ochre-brown, grey-brown or grey, squamulose only at centre, often seemingly smooth. Growing fasciculate, on wood, trunks or wood-chips. Spores < 10 µm long when smooth, if larger then spores warty (subsect. Atramentarii (Fr.) Konr. & Maubl.).
